Lifetime vs subscription vs rental: which Expert Advisor licence costs less?

Two EAs with the same strategy can cost very different amounts depending on how they are licensed. Understanding the licence models lets you compare real cost over the time you expect to trade, instead of being drawn in by a low first payment.

The three common licence models

A lifetime licence is a single payment for the right to use the EA indefinitely, usually with a stated update policy. A subscription charges monthly or yearly and ends if you stop paying. A rental gives access for a fixed short period and is often used to trial a system.

Work out the total cost over your time horizon

Multiply a subscription's price by the number of months you plan to use the EA and compare it with a lifetime price. A subscription that looks cheap per month can overtake a one-time purchase within a year. If you are unsure you will use the EA for long, a rental or a short subscription limits the downside.

What lifetime should mean

Lifetime can mean lifetime of the product, lifetime of the seller's business or a fixed number of years, so read how it is defined. Check whether new versions and bug fixes are included, and whether a new MetaTrader build or a broker change will be supported.

Account and device limits

Licences often limit the number of trading accounts or machines. Check whether the licence is tied to one account number, whether you can move it, whether it covers both demo and live accounts, and what extra accounts cost.

Updates, support and refunds

A licence is only as good as what surrounds it. Look for a published update policy, a support route that responds, and a clear refund policy. These matter more than a small difference in price, especially if the EA depends on settings that change over time.

How to choose

If you plan to trade the strategy for a year or more and it fits your risk tolerance, a lifetime licence with included updates is usually the lowest total cost. If you are testing, start with a rental or the shortest term and move to a longer licence once you have forward tested it on a demo account.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lifetime EA licence worth it?

Often, if you will use the EA for more than a year and updates are included. Check how lifetime is defined first.

Can I use one licence on several accounts?

It depends on the licence. Many are tied to a number of accounts. Read the terms before buying.

What happens to a subscription EA if I stop paying?

It normally stops working or stops receiving updates. Check the seller's terms.

Should I test an EA before buying a lifetime licence?

Yes. Forward test on a demo account first, or start with a rental, since no EA can guarantee profit.
