How to install an Expert Advisor (EA) on MetaTrader 5

An Expert Advisor (EA) is a program that trades automatically inside MetaTrader 5. Installing one takes a few minutes. This guide works for every EA from ForexCopilotEA and for most other MetaTrader 5 EAs.

  1. 1

    Download your files

After purchase, open Your downloads in your account. You normally get the EA file (.ex5), a setfile (.set) with the recommended settings, and a PDF user manual. Save them somewhere easy to find.

  2. 2

Copy the .ex5 file into MetaTrader 5

In MetaTrader 5 choose File, then Open Data Folder. Open the MQL5 folder, then Experts, and paste the .ex5 file there. Make sure it is the MetaTrader 5 (MQL5) folder, not an MQL4 one.

  3. 3

    Refresh the Navigator

Press Ctrl+N to open the Navigator, right-click Expert Advisors and choose Refresh. Your EA now appears in the list. If it does not, restart MetaTrader 5.

  4. 4

    Open the right chart

Open a chart for the symbol and timeframe named in the user manual (for example XAUUSD for gold EAs). Some brokers add a suffix such as XAUUSDm or GOLD; use the symbol your broker offers for the same market.

  5. 5

Attach the EA and load the setfile

Drag the EA from the Navigator onto the chart. On the Common tab, tick Allow Algo Trading. On the Inputs tab click Load and choose the .set file that came with your EA, then press OK.

  6. 6

    Turn on Algo Trading

Make sure the Algo Trading button in the top toolbar is green, and that Tools, Options, Expert Advisors allows algorithmic trading. A smiling face in the chart's top-right corner means the EA is running; a sad face means trading is disabled.

  7. 7

Test on a demo account first

Run the EA on a demo account and check that it behaves as the manual describes before you consider using real money. You can also run it in the Strategy Tester (Ctrl+R) to review its behaviour on historical data.

Troubleshooting and common questions

The EA does not appear in the Navigator

Check that the .ex5 file is inside MQL5\Experts (not an MQL4 folder), then right-click Expert Advisors and choose Refresh, or restart MetaTrader 5.

The chart shows a sad face or the EA does nothing

Enable the Algo Trading button in the toolbar, tick Allow Algo Trading in the EA's Common tab, and confirm your broker allows automated trading on the account.

The EA says the symbol or timeframe is wrong

Open the chart that matches the manual's recommended symbol and timeframe. If your broker uses a suffix on symbol names, use that broker symbol and keep the same timeframe.

Trades are rejected (invalid volume or not enough money)

Check the lot size in the EA's inputs against your account's minimum lot, step and free margin. Reduce the lot size or risk setting, then try again.

Do I need a VPS?

An EA only trades while MetaTrader 5 is running and connected. A VPS (virtual private server) keeps the platform online around the clock without leaving your own computer on.

Trading foreign exchange, gold and CFDs carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Past performance, backtests and live results do not guarantee future returns. This guide is technical help for installing software, not financial advice.
