Fix common MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor errors

When an Expert Advisor does not open trades, MetaTrader 5 usually tells you why. The message appears in the Experts and Journal tabs of the Toolbox (press Ctrl+T). This guide lists the most common causes and how to fix each one.

Where to look first

Open the Experts tab and read the latest lines. Then check that the Algo Trading button in the top toolbar is green, that the EA's smiley face in the chart's top-right corner is smiling, and that Allow Algo Trading is ticked in the EA's Common tab.

Algo trading disabled by the client (10027)

Error 10027 means automated trading is turned off in the terminal. Click the Algo Trading button in the toolbar, or enable it under Tools, Options, Expert Advisors.

Invalid stops (10016)

The stop loss or take profit is too close to the current price, or on the wrong side. Brokers set a minimum stop distance. Increase the EA's stop distance setting or choose a broker or account with a smaller stop level.

Not enough money (10019)

The account does not have the free margin for the requested lot size. Reduce the lot size or risk setting, or fund the account.

Market closed (10018) and trade disabled

Markets close at weekends and for short daily breaks, and trading can be disabled on a symbol. Wait for the session to open, and check the symbol's trade mode in its Specification.

Unsupported filling mode (10030)

The broker does not accept the order filling type the EA requests. Check whether the EA has a filling mode input and try a different option, or choose the one your broker's symbol specification lists.

Frequently asked questions

The EA shows a sad face. What does that mean?

Algo trading is disabled for that chart. Enable the Algo Trading button and tick Allow Algo Trading in the EA's Common tab.

Where do I find the error text?

In the Experts tab of the Toolbox. The Journal tab shows terminal and server events.

The EA is running but opens no trades. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Most EAs wait for their entry conditions, and filters such as spread, time or news can block entries. Check the EA's manual for its filters.
