How pip value is calculated

A pip is the standard small price step: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. The value of one pip is that step multiplied by the contract size (100,000 units for a standard lot) and by the number of lots. The result is in the pair's quote currency, so it is converted to your account currency at the current rate.

Worked examples

EURUSD on a USD account: 0.0001 x 100,000 = 10 USD per pip for 1.00 lot, so 0.50 lots is worth 5 USD per pip.

USDJPY on a USD account: 0.01 x 100,000 = 1,000 JPY per pip for 1.00 lot. With USDJPY at 150, one yen is worth 1 / 150 USD, so a pip is about 6.67 USD. Enter 0.00667 in the conversion field to see it.

Why it matters for an Expert Advisor

An EA's stop loss and take profit are usually set in pips or points, so the same setting risks a different amount on a different pair or lot size. Knowing the pip value lets you turn a stop in pips into money, and from there into a lot size that risks a fixed share of the account. The lot size calculator does that last step for you.

Pips, points and gold

MetaTrader 5 prices often have a fifth decimal (or a third on yen pairs), and its "points" are one tenth of a pip on those symbols. Gold is not standardised: brokers differ on what they call a pip, so for XAUUSD work in dollars of price movement instead, as the gold lot size calculator does. Confirm the tick value and contract size in the symbol specification in MT5 before you rely on any figure.
